Empathy – Understanding team dynamics and building trust.

Adaptability – Thriving in uncertainty and making tough decisions when plans change.

Who Can Be a Project Leader?

One of the most common myths about leadership is that it’s tied to a title or a senior position. But the truth is, anyone can be a project leader. Leadership is about behaviours, not hierarchies.

The Institute of Leadership defines five dimensions of leadership that anyone can develop:

 Authenticity

Being authentic means being genuine and true to your values. It’s not about perfection—it’s about honesty. Authentic leaders build trust and foster collaboration within their teams.

 Vision

A clear vision inspires and motivates your team. I often found this invaluable during projects like Olympic legacy venue, where aligning the team with the broader goal kept everyone energised.

 Achievement

Leaders deliver results by setting ambitious goals and consistently following through. Celebrating even small wins along the way can keep momentum high.

 Ownership

True leaders take accountability for the project’s success and failures. Ownership builds trust and shows the team you’re invested in the outcome.

 Collaboration

Effective leaders work with their teams, not above them. By valuing diverse perspectives, they drive innovation and problem-solving.

Why is Project Leadership Important?
