Introduction
Leadership is what makes a good project truly great. But project leadership isn’t just about ticking boxes or hitting deadlines—it’s about inspiring your team, creating alignment, and delivering meaningful outcomes.
During my career, I’ve learned that leadership is the thread that ties together even the most complex projects. We’ll explore what project leadership really means, who can step into this role, and why it’s so important for success.

What is Project Leadership?
Project leadership is the art of influencing, guiding, and inspiring a team to deliver exceptional results. While project management is focused on the processes, tools, and execution of a project, leadership brings a more human element to the table.
Key characteristics of project leadership include:
Vision – Providing a clear direction for the team and stakeholders.
Empathy – Understanding team dynamics and building trust.
Adaptability – Thriving in uncertainty and making tough decisions when plans change.

Who Can Be a Project Leader?
One of the most common myths about leadership is that it’s tied to a title or a senior position. But the truth is, anyone can be a project leader. Leadership is about behaviours, not hierarchies.
The Institute of Leadership defines five dimensions of leadership that anyone can develop:
 Authenticity
Being authentic means being genuine and true to your values. It’s not about perfection—it’s about honesty. Authentic leaders build trust and foster collaboration within their teams.
 Vision
A clear vision inspires and motivates your team. I often found this invaluable during projects like Olympic legacy venue, where aligning the team with the broader goal kept everyone energised.
 Achievement
Leaders deliver results by setting ambitious goals and consistently following through. Celebrating even small wins along the way can keep momentum high.
 Ownership
True leaders take accountability for the project’s success and failures. Ownership builds trust and shows the team you’re invested in the outcome.
 Collaboration
Effective leaders work with their teams, not above them. By valuing diverse perspectives, they drive innovation and problem-solving.

Why is Project Leadership Important?
Without strong leadership, projects can lose focus, suffer from poor communication, or struggle to adapt to changing circumstances. Leadership is what brings clarity, alignment, and purpose to the team.
Consider a high-profile project and sensitive programmes. Strong leadership is essential to maintain trust with stakeholders, ensure the team worked cohesively, and adapt plans as new challenges arise.
Benefits of Strong Project Leadership:
Team Engagement – A motivated team is a productive team.
Better Decision-Making – Leaders provide clarity in complex or uncertain situations.
Stakeholder Confidence – Leadership reassures stakeholders that the project is in capable hands.
Prioritising – Know which activities to deprioritise as well as the ones to focus on.

The Balance Between Leadership and Management
While leadership is critical, it doesn’t replace project management. In fact, the two go hand in hand. A good leader also understands the importance of processes, while a strong manager recognises the value of inspiration and alignment.

Striking the right balance between these roles can be a game-changer for your project.

Practical Insights: Leadership in Action
One moment that stands out in my career was during the ISO Net Zero guidelines project. Leadership wasn’t just about delivering on time—it was about ensuring that our efforts contributed to a meaningful goal. By keeping the "big picture" front and centre, we motivated the team to push through challenges and stay committed.

Conclusion
Project leadership isn’t reserved for a select few—it’s a skill anyone can develop. By focusing on authenticity, vision, achievement, ownership, and collaboration, you can transform the way you deliver projects.
